Happy Sunday, everyone! How has your weekend been treating you? It’s been a rather relaxing one for me, but boy, it sure has been COLD lately. I am SO very much over winter—honestly, I’m over winter as soon as it starts. I’m not cold-blooded like some folks are, but I’m definitely not hot-blooded either. I hate summer almost as much as I hate winter. 😂 I’ll take spring and autumn all year, thank you very much!
Yes, I said ‘autumn‘ instead of ‘fall’. It’s so much more descriptive and fancy than ‘fall’—such a plain word. I’ve been finding as I grown older that I have been favoring more and more of British English over American English. I’m frequently tempted to start spelling words using ‘u’ in them (as in ‘colour’, or ‘glamour’), and using ‘s’ instead of ‘z’ (think ‘organise’, or ‘prioritise’). In fact, I’ve been fascinated by the British accent for a number of years now, and have been looking for ways to learn how to speak with one. Of course, I don’t know enough about the differing regional accents, so there’s still more research to be done…
I’m also still trying to figure out how to migrate my site over to the new “.me” domain I purchased, so if anyone has tips, tricks, or advice, I’m all ears. 🙏🏼
This Got Me Thinking
It’s funny how sometimes the most innocuous things can sometimes really emphasize a point, or really drive it home in your brain. This very thing happened to me at lunch one day last week.
I had just finished eating lunch, and the owner brought the check (or ‘cheque’ 😜) over to me to sign before leaving to walk back to work. Without any conscious thought to it, I added in the tip, totaled the bill, and signed it—much more slowly, and with more deliberation than I normally would have done any other day. Afterwards, I took a look at the slip of paper, and was a bit astonished by how clearly and legible my writing was when taking a moment to slow down (my signature is a whole other issue, haha). In that very moment, something clicked in my head.
When I take the time to slow down and be more deliberate, things tend to turn out more clearly.
The rest of the week, I tried to live in that thought, and remind myself of it. When I took notes, I would slow down as I wrote. When speaking, I would think about what I wanted to say before I spoke. And you know what? The funniest thing happened, things were more clear—what I had written down, even the thoughts I wanted to convey. It hit especially hard with regard to my speaking, as I have noticed an increase in difficulty in recalling words or remembering details when in conversation as I grow older. I don’t like that one bit, let me tell you!
The same mindset and practice can apply to security as well, when receiving an email from a questionable source, or a text message from someone you don’t know. Take the time to slow down, and you might be surprised how clear things become. I challenge you to try it in your own life—see what kind of difference it can make.
Finally, here’s a look back at what I wore to work this past week. There are only three days’ worth of outfits this time, as I was out of the office at a security retreat, in addition to my regular remote day. I hope you enjoy them.
Have a safe and enjoyable remainder of your weekend!
-Terry
